Fletcher Scholarships

The Fletcher School awards over $7 million in scholarship aid annually. Fletcher Scholarships are for tuition only and are awarded on the basis of merit and need to both U.S. citizens/permanent residents and non-U.S. citizens. Financial need is determined through an evaluation of an applicant’s resources, which includes income and asset information. Merit is assessed through the application for admission.

The Fletcher School is committed to providing scholarship assistance to as many students as possible; however, our resources are limited. While over ninety percent of the candidates requesting scholarship aid receive at least partial funding, Fletcher students need to formulate a financial plan that does not rely solely on Fletcher scholarship aid. Fletcher scholarships typically range from $5,000 per academic year up to full tuition. The middle 50 percent of scholarships awarded are in the $8,000 to $18,000 range. Please note that Fletcher offers very few full tuition scholarships, and assistance to support living expenses is not available.

All applicants seeking scholarship aid must submit a complete Fletcher Scholarship Application (included with the Application for Admission) by January 10. By completing the scholarship application, applicants are eligible for all Fletcher scholarships. All scholarship recipients (including Early Notification candidates) are notified at the Regular Decision deadline. Scholarships are renewable in the second year for those students who maintain full-time status and remain in good academic standing. In the event that a student’s tuition charges are reduced, the Fletcher Scholarship will be pro-rated accordingly.

Tuition scholarships are granted on the basis of need and merit to PhD students in the coursework phase of their degree. Some stipend funding may also be available and, as scholarships are not tied to research or teaching responsibilities, students may arrange their own preferred work during the academic year.  Scholarships are also available for the Enrollment Fee paid by PhD students who have completed their coursework. Applicants for admission to the PhD program should complete the scholarship application form on the online application.

Robert F. Meagher Foundation Scholarship

The Fletcher School is pleased to offer the Robert F. Meagher Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship honors Professor Emeritus Robert F. Meagher, who dedicated his career at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy to the study, teaching and implementation of the theories of international law, and economic and social development. The scholarship covers tuition and provides a small living stipend. Robert F. Meagher Scholars are selected on the basis of merit and financial need. Candidates for admission who submit a Fletcher Scholarship Application will be considered. A separate application is not required.

Robertson Fellows Program

The Robertson Foundation for Government is a nonprofit family foundation dedicated to helping the U.S. Federal Government meet its talent needs by identifying, educating and motivating top U.S. graduate students to pursue federal government careers in foreign policy, national security and international affairs.
The Robertson Fellows Program at The Fletcher School provides full tuition scholarships for four second year MALD students (U.S. citizens) interested in pursuing employment with the U.S. Federal Government. If selected, recipients commit to working for the U.S. Federal Government for at least three years (36 months) during the first seven years after receiving the MALD. The Fletcher School will send an application announcement to enrolled students on an annual basis.

Other Named Scholarships

Other named scholarships and fellowships have been established by benefactors of The Fletcher School. Unless otherwise noted in the fellowship description, all applicants requesting scholarship assistance are automatically considered for these awards. Applicants need only submit the required financial aid application included in the application for admission. No other forms are necessary nor are special applications required.

Special Program Scholarships

The Fletcher School is pleased to provide scholarship assistance to participants in the following programs.  Special program scholarships are included as part of your Fletcher scholarship award.  Based on merit and need, Fletcher Scholarships for special program participants may exceed the minimum award.

  • AmeriCorps Alumni – minimum scholarship of $5,000 per academic year
  • Charles B. Rangel Fellows – first and second year scholarships based on merit and need
  • Harambe Fletcher Scholarship– a full tuition scholarship for one Harambe Entrepreneur Alliance Affiliate or Associate who has been accepted to the MIB or MALD program
  • Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Fellows – minimum scholarship of $5,000 per academic year
  • Returned Peace Corps Volunteers – minimum scholarship of $5,000 per academic year
  • Ronald E. McNair Scholars – minimum scholarship of $5,000 per academic year
  • Teach For America Alumni – minimum scholarship of $5,000 per academic year
  • Teach for China Alumni – minimum scholarship of $5,000 per academic year
  • Teach for India Alumni – minimum scholarship of $5,000 per academic year
  • Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellows – second year scholarship based on merit and need

Outside Scholarships

Admitted students are encouraged to apply for scholarships offered through government agencies, private foundations and other sources. The Internet and scholarship guidebooks can be helpful in searching for outside scholarship information. The deadlines for many scholarships sponsored by private organizations are often in October or November of the year before a student intends to matriculate.

Applicants from the United States are urged to consult their undergraduate placement, counseling, and financial aid offices regarding fellowship programs that may support graduate study. International students should apply for awards offered by their governments or by governmental and private agencies in the United States or elsewhere.
